So my mom served this delicious chai tea latte to me….She is an AMAZING cook so it was complete unsurprising when she said she came up with the recipe herself. It was so good, I just had to share it with you all! I haven’t tried it iced but I imagine it would work well! …maybe add another bag of black tea to make it stronger so the ice doesn’t water it down OR let cool before you pour over ice. 🙂 Hope you enjoy!
Homemade Chai Tea Latte
Prep time: 10 minutes, servings: 4-8
4 1/2 cups water
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon cardamom pods, slightly crushed
1 teaspoon whole black peppercorns
6 whole cloves
1/2 teaspoon fennel seed
2 star anise
1 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
1 1-inch piece dried ginger
4 bags black tea
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Honey, sugar, or preferred sweetener to taste
3 cups milk
Pour the water into a 3 quart heavy bottomed pot. Add the dry spices and tea bags. Bring to a boil. Partially cover the pot and lower heat to simmer about 15-20 minutes. Stir in milk and vanilla extract and heat without allowing to boil. Pour tea through strainer into cups. Add honey or preferred sweetener to taste.
Optional: use a milk frother on 1/4 cup of milk and pour on top of the tea.
