Two clipboards hang on our kitchen wall- one for holding our shopping/to do list and the other, our weekly menu.
After I started displaying them, I was surprised by the amount of times people ask if I actually follow/cook what’s on it.
Well…the answer is yes! Aside from the times I’m not feeling well or am just plain tired of cooking, I usually always stick to it for the following reasons:
- Less stress
- Saves money
- Planned out meals mean healthier meals
No more scrambling at 5:00PM when I realize I have no idea what to cook or what ingredients I have. The menu is planned and grocery shopping is done in advance. The ingredients for any listed meal will be there. One little trick I’ve done is to take a few minutes to jot down meals your family likes to eat. I keep that on my desk so if there isn’t a new meal I’d like to try- I pull one of the tried and true from the list when making the weekly menu. Easy Peasy!
This one is a big one and your weekly grocery store advertisement will come in handy. I use them along with what’s already in our pantry/freezer to plan out the upcoming weeks menu based on what’s on sale. Our advertisements are delivered in the mail on Friday so I’ll usually meal plan on Saturday and shop on Sunday. Recently, chicken was on sale at Giant for 88 cents a pound! That’s over $2.00 in savings on the usual price so was a good time to stock up and freeze.
Another way menu planning saves us money is that I always cook for leftovers. This way, I can pack Zach’s lunch for the next day. We spend almost no money on him eating out for lunch. So saying he spent $10 a day – 5 days a week – that’s savings of $200 a month right there!
When you already know what you’re going to prepare and know you have the proper ingredients to do so, you avoid unhealthy food choices. It also helps to see everything written out in front of you..that way I can make sure we’re getting in a good variety of fruits and veggies…no one likes eating the same things over and over!
